Its baffling that anakin isn't at least in better control of his emotions than he is. He would be teaching anakin these things. He never really had a father figure who could teach him how to handle his emotions The thing that should draw out an emotional reaction from her if she has any feelings at all-is responded to as "you're making fun of me" (when to all appearances, Anakin was completely sincere). Literally the ONLY consistent characterization of Padme in the whole trilogy is that she has endless faith in democracy-but her response to that is completely tepid. The absolute worst offender for this is the political discussion they have where Anakin basically says "yeah a dictatorship that works sounds pretty good to me". Attack of the Clones is exactly the opposite-the characters never stop expressing themselves but have no believable emotions at all. None of these things sound like Attack of the Clones-because awkward people don't monologue at each other in weird inflections, they act unsure of what to say or say more than they intend or clearly plan to say something but don't or a thousand other ways to convey "this person has emotions but lacks the ability to express them". It's a staple of almost anything with a high school setting (because teenagers are awkward as fuck) and there are entire genres of "highly sheltered individual is exposed to the real world for the first time". There are entire genres built around "awkward people who don't really know how to interact with each other". Yeah, from the content of this post I honestly wonder if the OP has consumed any media outside of Star Wars. It's a nice way to contextualize it in world, but think about how it would sound if a good screenwriter wanted them to sound awkward, or a good director gave them that motivation. Their relationship was doomed from the start, and Anakin's inability to talk like a normal human being around her was just the beginning. They even choose to get married after spending less than a week together. I don't know what compelled her to want to be with someone who seems to have no issue with slaughtering an entire village of people. This is what the Jedi meant when they said Anakin was "too old", if this Jedi way of life isn't injected into you at birth then you're going to end up conflicted and socially awkward especially since Anakin lived a relatively normal life before Qui Gon showed up and it was all taken away from him.Īnakin is a real weirdo, but so is Padme. He doesn't even know what words to use describe his emotions so he ends up rambling on about sand and using a lot of weird metaphors. It's no wonder Anakin is spilling the figurative spaghetti out of his pockets when he sees Padme for the first time in 10 years. The Jedi live a stoic, sexless life that encourages repressing your emotions. Think about it, Anakin was taken from his mother before he hit puberty and throughout his life at the Jedi Temple he never really had a father figure who could teach him how to handle his emotions and learn how to talk to women. People like to put down Attack of the Clones for awkward dialog between Anakin and Padme but I think it was intentional and makes sense. Maintain a polite, academic style discussion atmosphere.
